The junction of the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails served as a stopping point for many of the pioneers who traveled the country in search of prosperity and a home in the mid to late nineteenth century. Gardner Kansas was settled in 1857 by people who recognized the potential of the area. In 1870 the railroad was established, contributing to Gardner’s role as a transportation point for goods and services. The citizens' commitment to hard work and pride fostered a strong sense of community.
More than 100 years later, Gardner, Kansas finds itself in a similar situation. Today, Gardner continues to be "settled" by people looking for a special place to raise a family and enjoy the good life. Edgerton, Kansas
Located in the northeast corner of Kansas, Edgerton is an idyllic community with a rich and colorful past. The historic Oregon and Santa Fe trails parted just a few miles east of town. Incorporated in 1883, Edgerton was named for the chief railroad engineer who helped lay down the railroad tracks that passed by the future town site. The Santa Fe Railroad breathed life into an area that was originally bounty lands for soldiers who fought in the Indian Wars and the War of 1812. Edgerton’s birth was the death knell for the nearby towns of Lanesfield and McCamish. These towns were not on the rail line and their settlers, and many of their buildings, moved to the more prosperous Edgerton. The stone schoolhouse at Lanesfield has been preserved as part of a historic site.
Today, the residents of Edgerton enjoy a small-town, rural setting in one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. Located in the southwest corner of Johnson County, Edgerton is accessible from Highway 56 to the north and I-35 two miles to the south. Here you can find charming older neighborhoods as well as some of the newest housing in the county.
